I am a professor of Social Medicine at UNC School of Medicine, with training in sociology and public health. My research in the ELSI aspects of genomics began in 1999, with an R01 that explored how gene transfer researchers and study participants understood the potential for benefit in early phase trials. A second grant focused on perceptions of genomic research by diverse communities. In 2007, I became the director of the UNC Center for Genomics and Society, supporting interdisciplinary projects that including foundational work on clinical sequencing and population genomic screening. advances in genomics and bioinformatics, and the use of biobank specimens in genomic research.
