Dr. SHAMEKA POETRY THOMAS, PhD is a Global Maternal and Child Health Scholar and Medical Sociologist who recently completed the Fogarty International Global Health Fellowship at Harvard University, School of Public Health. As an early-career principal investigator, she finalized her data collection, leading a project called: SICKLE CELL WOMEN & GIRLS (S.W.A.G.) PROJECT OF ACCRA, GHANA. She collected data at the Ghana Institute of Clinical Genetics, while living abroad in Ghana this past academic year for 12 consecutive months. Dr. Thomas also completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) / National Human Genomics Research Institutes (NHGRI)-Bethesda campus, where her scientific research focused on patient perceptions of noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) among Black women with genetic conditions, such as sickle cell disease. Dr. Thomas received her Ph.D. from University of Miami, where her dissertation entitled, “Giving Birth in South Florida: A Phenomenological Study on the Pregnancy and Birthing Experiences among Black Women,” was nominated for the Most Outstanding Dissertation award. Dr. Thomas is an editor on the advisory board for Springer Nature’s Maternal and Child Health Journal, 2023-2025 and also serves on the Medical Advisory Board for the Sickle Celll Reproductive Education Directive Network. She joins the Ohio State University’s College of Medicine Center for Bioethics as a research faculty and provost scholar on the tenure track .
