Sara Ackerman is a medical anthropologist and Associate Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California San Francisco. Her empirical ethics research draws on ethnographic methods to examine social, ethical and equity issues in the clinical application of emerging genomic technologies, with a particular focus on the value of genomic sequencing results for disadvantaged families. Dr. Ackerman also investigates patient and public perspectives about health data sharing and is guiding UCSF's implementation of a health data governance model that prioritizes public engagement, equitable benefit, and accountability. Dr. Ackerman teaches three courses at UCSF: Community-Engaged Research, Qualitative Methods, and Responsible Conduct of Research.
