Dr. Markens is a medical sociologist/science studies scholar whose research has focused on the social, cultural, and ethical impact of and debates about new genetic and reproductive technologies and practices. In addition to her book, Surrogate Motherhood & The Politics of Reproduction (University of California Press), Dr. Markens has published a series of articles on women's decision about prenatal testing and pregnancy. More recently her research has focused on the profession of genetic counseling, using it as a key research site to explore how the genetic science gets produced and translated from the lab to the clinic.
