PhD Student & Research Assistant
Pennsylvania State University, Pennsylvania, United States
I am Karolus Wangi from Flores East-Nusa-Tenggara, Indonesia. I am a Ph.D. candidate in nursing at Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing at Pennsylvania State University, USA. My research interests intersect nursing, bioethics, genetics, and health. I am deeply committed to advocating for persons with genetic conditions or vulnerable groups and striving to preserve their dignity. Through a nursing ethics lens, I address bioethical issues in healthcare practice and inform policy.
I have been awarded a research grant from the Interdepartmental Graduate Student Grant (IGSG) 2022, funded by Penn State College of Health and Human Development (HHD). This grant supports my qualitative research project on the reproductive rights of mothers with Transfusion-Dependent-Thalassemia (TDT) in West Java, Indonesia. My dissertation plan will explore bioethical issues related to human dignity in patients with TDT, including health equity issues regarding CRISPR-based gene editing therapy for patients with TDT in the context of patient care in low-middle-income countries and sociodemographic disparity settings.
