Lebogang Montewa is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Medicine at UCT, where her research focuses on Evaluating community engagement practices to foster ethical conversations in genomics research. Alongside her academic pursuits, she serves as a Coordinator at the Ethics Neuroscience Institute. With a passion for science communication and community engagement, Lebogang is also an emerging filmmaker. She aims to bridge the gap between science and society by exploring narrative genomics and neuroethics in her films.
In 2022, Lebogang became a National Geographic Society fellow through NEWF (Nature, Environment, and Wildlife Filmmakers) in South Africa. Through this fellowship, she endeavors to enhance her filmmaking skills to create compelling narratives that intertwine health and environmental stories. Her ultimate goal is to use film as a tool to foster ethical conversations and showcase Africa's excellence and emerging scientific discoveries.
Lebogang draws inspiration from Chinua Achebe, particularly his quote: "Until the lions have their own historians, tales of African hunting will always glorify the hunter." Highlighting her commitment to amplifying African voices and narratives in both academia and filmmaking.
